What is Paint the Moon Site?

Introduction

Paint the Moon Site is a unique digital space where users can claim and trade virtual grid cells on a x grid covering the surface of the Moon—or any other celestial body of choice. Inspired by Dennis Hope's Lunar Embassy project, the Million Dollar Homepage, and when the well-known joke about the Russians are painting the Moon red, our platform brings a new twist to digital real estate.

Claiming a Free Cell

Every user can claim one free cell on the grid, as long as they do not already own one. This cell serves as their personal space to upload an image and an optional link. If a user sells their last cell, they must wait hours before claiming another free one.

Buying Additional Cells

For those who wish to own more than one cell at a time, additional cells can be purchased directly from the platform for $ each, or directly from other users on their own price. However, cells cannot be merged, swapped, or transferred outside of sales within the marketplace.

Uploading Content

Each cell owner can upload a square image (max 20KB, JPEG only) and provide an optional hyperlink. Animated images are not supported—only the first frame will be displayed. If a free cell owner fails to upload an image within 168 hours (7 days), the cell reverts back to the platform and becomes available for others to claim.

The Marketplace

Users can list their cells for sale at any price starting from $. Listings can be cancelled at any time, but only one active listing per cell is allowed. When a cell is sold, ownership transfers automatically, but the content remains until the new owner decides to change it.

Transaction Fees

The platform takes a % commission from all marketplace transactions to sustain operations. Sales are securely processed through Stripe, and sellers must have a Stripe account to receive payouts.

Cell History

Each cell has a public history detailing its past transactions, including:

  • Claiming (when it was first acquired for free)
  • Losing (if a free claim expired without content being uploaded)
  • Listings and sales (prices and ownership changes)
